A Core i3-based laptop would probably have at least 4GB of RAM. To take advantage of all that memory, you need a 64-bit operating system. The x64 version of XP…well, it sucks. Win7 x64 will run many more applications than XP x64.
And you’ll find that once you use it, you just can’t go back…it’s that much better than XP.

If you need the power and the portability also you will be in for a rather large bill for a machine to fill your needs, or you will need to wait a bit longer for your processing.
Try making sure you do not have processes running in the background and do general maintenance (Disk Clean Up, Defrag, antimalware, etc) and that might help a bit.
