It’s legitimate security software that’s embedded in the BIOS. If your laptop is stolen, it can be tracked on the internet & then possibly recovered. If it could be easily removed, it would be worthless. Of course, it also means the laptop can potentially be tracked whenever it’s connected to the internet. The only way to get rid of it would be to modify the BIOS. If you have a problem with it being installed, return the laptop.
“Absolute and Acer have collaborated to embed Absolute’s technology in the firmware for additional tamper-resistance,” said John Livingston, Chairman and CEO of Absolute. “With this new collaboration between Acer, Intel and Absolute, Acer is giving their customers the best solutions available to track, manage and protect their mobile computers.”

Your first concern (naturally) is not to lose any personal files etc. So copy them to DVD at least and check the copies are accessible before proceeding any further after making the copies.
Regardless of how you set about re-instalng windows (and sluc’s approach is viable) first safeguard your files as above or below).
If you cannot boot into windows at present, then using another computer – download a free ubuntu ISO and burn it to a DVD. This is Linux based operating system. It will load itself into the RAM only – do not tell it to install itself to the hard drive. Once it boots up, to s typical desktop, you can locate your hard drive, and then copy the files to DVD that way. Again verify the copies are OK.
ubuntu.com is where to find the ISO (a file you “burn” to a DVD – not simply copy it).
Once your personal files are safely copied to DVD then you can set about rebuilding the system. There are a few options in that regard too… But “first” ensure your files are safe “off” the system as is.
You download the basic Ubuntu desktop version.
Again – before you actually set about re-installing windows – ensure you have copied your files to DVD at least.
You might be able to gain access to your windows system via safe-mode:

If the file looks fine, you can drag it into your notebook and delete the corrupt file. Otherwise, KB article 825779 describes how to repair a OneNote file. I’d first create a back-up copy of the corrupt file in case something goes wrong and you need to try again. Then click Start–>Run, and type: onenote.exe /forcerepair “filepath”where filepath (in quotes!) is the full path to the file that is corrupted. You can get this path by hovering the mouse over the section tab in OneNote. It’s probably something like, “C:\Documents and Settings\your-name\My Documents\OneNote Notebooks\notebook-name\section-name.one” If you still have OneNote 2007 installed, be sure you run the 2010 version of onenote.exe (instead of typing onenote.exe above, type “C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\onenote.exe”) In case you can’t resolve the issue http://myitforum.com/myitforumwp/co…

The Gateway brand was originally called Gateway 2000 – all of their models were Gateway 2000 something, until they changed the name to just Gateway.
“History”
“Gateway was founded on September 5, 1985, on a farm outside Sioux City, Iowa, by Ted Waitt and Mike Hammond. Originally called Gateway 2000, it was one of the first widely successful direct sales PC companies……”
“It dropped the “2000” from its name on October 31, 1998.”
Since it was started up in 1985 and the name was used until 1998, it could be anything from a XT clone or 286 to a Pentium or PII or PIII model.
If you look at the zoom in of the back of the case you provided a link to, the FCC ID number is a good clue regarding which cpu the mboard has and what it’s speed is. That particular one has FCC ID: HWYMA386-25 It has a 386 cpu, 25mhz. Useless for modern operating systems.
The times Gateway registered that FCC ID was 07/18/1990, and 01/03/1991
The FCC ID number on your case may be completely different.
If you search on the above site, the date the FCC ID was registered is a good clue – the earliest date is close to the date when the model was first released.
(If you get no “hits” when you use the entire FCC ID, use the first three letters, and part of the last characters, or just the first 3 letters for many models, and find one in the list close to yours.)
The Gateway web site http://www.gateway.com doesn’t seem to have any info about their Gateway 2000 computers, unless, possibly, you happen to have a model that has the same first two letters in your FCC ID number as models listed when you search for support.
