I’ve seen this issue in major programs from Microsoft & other big names – it’s a really annoying usability issue, and I complain about it every chance I get, hehe.
What I do, is set a dark-ish grey background…something where both white text and black text will be visible, but it doesn’t burn my eyes out staring at the screen.
Really annoying, but honestly, trying to do this on linux is 10 times worse, and Mac OS/X won’t even let you specify a different background/foreground color…so even tho it sucks sometimes, Windows still supports this best.
Unless of course, you want to go shell-only and forget the GUI…real men live on the command line anyway, hehehe.

It’s a VERY good idea to disable any resident module of any anti-malware software that you have running before you do the following.

If it boots into Safe Mode, then run a System Restore to a date before anyone else used it (you may need to check off ‘show more restore points’), or at least a week or two back. If it does not boot into Safe Mode or will not do a System Restore, you will need a Repair Disk that you should have made when the system was new, but you can make from another Windows 7 machine as long as both are the same type (32bit or 64bit) and do the System Restore from the Bootable Repair Disk. If it does not repair this way, you will need a Live Linux disk to save your files (unless you already have a good, confirmed back up), and do a Factory Restore from the recovery partition (see your online manual for details) and begin over as it was when new.

Some systems need you to create new disks before the disaster happens. Some even expect you to purchase the disks from the OEM. Dell has in the past offered a way on their systems to recover it. Some Dell systems I believe need you to press the F8 key sort of quickly at the start of boot. Too late and you get the Microsoft version of F8. When you get it working again be sure to apply the latest Microsoft updates and if not already installed get a good security suite. At least get Microsoft’s security essentials or another complete suite.

Quit all programs that you may have started.
Shutdown your antivirus to avoid any conflicts.
Please disconnect any USB or external drives from the computer before you run this scan!
For Vista or Windows 7/8, right-click and select “Run as Administrator to start”
For Windows XP, double-click to start.
Wait until Prescan has finished …
Then Click on “Scan” button
Wait until the Status box shows “Scan Finished”
Anything that is not checked, leave it unchecked.
Click on “Delete”
Wait until the Status box shows “Deleting Finished”
