Solved Biostar H61MH Won’t Recognize Graphics Card

  • 2

The computer came with just Intel onboard graphics. First I changed out the psu to an HFX PRO650W then I put my new PNY GTS450 in the PCi-E slot and there’s no auto-detecting happening. I go into the Bios (a real adventure for me) and go to: Advanced>Chipset>Initiate Graphics Adapter and set it to “PEG/PCi” which I believe is the default. The PCI-E Express is set to “Auto” (It was on “Enabled” but now I’m trying it on “Auto”.

When testing this, my monitor cable is hooked up to the card and a six pin power supply cord is hooked up to the card as well (it has plenty o’ power). I get “no signal detected” on my monitor, the NVidia drivers I downloaded from NVidia say “no compatible hardware detected” so in essence this card doesn’t exist on this computer. I switch the monitor cable to Intel grapics and it works fine. That is, “fine” if I’m settling for onboard graphics.

I know this is the Bios forum so if you give me some more tips on what to do in my Bios please be very specific, don’t take anything for granted as to how I perceive what you’re telling me. Thanks.

  1. The video card does not require specific drivers to be installed in order for the computer to detect it and for it to produce video. ALL modern mboards, mboard bioses, video chipsets, and modern operating systems (e.g. win 95 and up) already support basic VGA video.

“At least my computer “auto detected” the 9500GT …..”

The video card will always be auto detected if it’s working properly, and if there’s nothing wrong with the PCI-E X16 slot’s circuits.

The fact that the other video card works fine indicates your mboard’s main chipset probably does NOT support Hybrid video, the onboard video is probably automatically disabled when you install a working card in the working PCI-E X16 slot, and there’s nothing wrong with the PCI-E X16 slot’s circuits if the card is detected by the mboard and the if specific video drivers you loaded for that card work fine.

“Now to return the PNY to Newegg (can’t get them to send me another one right away because it’s out of stock).”

Since it appears you have two dead video cards, it’s a lot more likely you did something you shouldn’t have done (see response 5) that fried the cards than the card was defective before you installed it.
A tiny percentage of new video cards may be dead on arrival, but when newegg indicates the card is re-certified, it HAS been tested to make sure it still works.
