    Key Takeaways

    • Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S26, S26+, and S26 Ultra on Wednesday, introducing $100 price increases across two models in the lineup.
    • Pricing for the S26 and S26+ begins at $899 and $1,099 respectively, while the S26 Ultra maintains its $1,299 price point.
    • Memory chip supply constraints, fueled by expanding AI infrastructure needs, are driving smartphone costs higher across the industry.
    • AI capabilities dominate the S26 lineup, featuring Google Gemini and Perplexity integration with autonomous task features like automated food delivery ordering.
    • Industry analysts anticipate the memory supply shortage will extend through 2027 or into early 2028, with memory component costs in smartphone production doubling across the last six months.

Samsung Electronics revealed its Galaxy S26 smartphone collection on Wednesday, bringing higher price tags to two of the three devices. The cost adjustments arrive as the technology sector navigates a memory chip supply crunch linked to rapid AI infrastructure buildout worldwide.

The Galaxy S26 carries a $899 starting price, representing a $100 increase from the previous S25 model. The S26+ launches at $1,099, marking a similar $100 elevation. The S26 Ultra maintains its $1,299 baseline pricing.

Samsung removed the previous $799 entry tier for the base S26 model, discontinuing the 128GB storage configuration completely. Every device in the new lineup includes a minimum of 256GB storage paired with 12GB of RAM.

Preorders opened for all models on February 25.

    AI Takes Center Stage

The S26 collection represents Samsung’s third iteration of AI-focused smartphones, building on the S24 debut from two years prior. All three devices operate on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor.

Samsung has integrated multiple AI capabilities driven by Google Gemini and Perplexity. The Now Nudge feature analyzes your messaging and calendar data to recommend responses and identify potential scheduling overlaps. Another capability enables Gemini to autonomously handle DoorDash orders or arrange Uber transportation.

The S26 Ultra introduces a privacy display feature — which Samsung describes as an industry first — that manages pixel light dispersion to limit viewing angles from the sides.

Ben Wood, chief analyst at CSS Insight, stated the S26 makes “positive steps forward” in democratizing AI functionality, though he questioned whether consumers would recognize tangible value at this point.

Gartner analyst Tuong Nguyen observed that AI capabilities are becoming standard expectations, yet hardware specifications remain the dominant factor driving upgrade decisions.

    Memory Supply Constraints

The pricing adjustments reflect broader market dynamics. Memory component costs in smartphone production have doubled during the past two quarters, based on CSS Insight data.

The supply shortage originates from AI data center construction absorbing resources away from consumer electronics manufacturing. Counterpoint Research projected in December that average smartphone retail prices would climb 6.9% during 2026 because of these pressures.

Ben Wood characterized the shortage as a prolonged challenge, projecting it will continue deep into 2027. Wood indicated chip availability issues could extend until 2027 or the beginning of 2028.

A Samsung spokesperson informed CNBC the company anticipates being “relatively well-positioned on the supply side through strategic partnerships.”

Paolo Pescatore, TMT analyst at PP Foresight, described the memory shortage as evolving beyond a specialized supply-chain topic into a “strategic constraint on the AI roadmap.”

He stated directly: “If memory costs stay elevated, Samsung faces a familiar squeeze: protect margins or protect volumes.”

Samsung president Wonjin Lee highlighted supply chain vulnerabilities during a Bloomberg interview in January, cautioning that memory chip limitations could elevate prices across multiple product categories.

The S26 Ultra offers a 6.9-inch display and an exclusive 10x telephoto camera absent from the standard models, with configurations available up to 16GB of RAM.
