Bitcoin experienced a notable retreat on Friday as military confrontations between the United States and Iran near the Strait of Hormuz triggered widespread concern among investors in both cryptocurrency and traditional equity markets.
The digital asset declined 1.7% to reach $79,679, while maintaining a 1.3% weekly advance — extending its winning streak to six consecutive weeks.

The geopolitical tensions emerged after the United States initiated an operation aimed at restoring commercial shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran challenged this action and claimed the U.S. had breached a ceasefire agreement.
The U.S. military subsequently verified it had retaliated against Iran after three American warships came under attack in the strait. President Trump shared on Truth Social that U.S. destroyers sustained no damage and characterized the military response as measured.
Trump additionally indicated he had halted the operation within days of its commencement. Markets responded with caution as tensions continued to simmer.
Previous reports had indicated progress toward a diplomatic agreement between the U.S. and Iran. Thursday’s military engagement, however, dominated market attention and overshadowed those earlier optimistic signals.
Strategy Inc Considers Bitcoin Asset Sales
Additional downward pressure on Bitcoin’s price emerged from Strategy Inc — holding the largest corporate Bitcoin position — announcing potential sales of its cryptocurrency assets to support dividend distributions.
The company withheld specific details regarding timing or the volume of assets it might liquidate. This announcement alone generated market uncertainty and contributed to bearish sentiment.
Ether declined 2.6% to reach $2,275, while XRP retreated 2.3% to $1.38. Solana posted a 1.2% decrease and Cardano dropped 2.2%. Dogecoin experienced the steepest decline among meme-based cryptocurrencies, falling 4.9%.
Binance Faces Treasury Department Compliance Requirements
Binance, operating as the world’s premier cryptocurrency exchange platform, received correspondence from the U.S. Treasury on Thursday requiring adherence to a sanctions monitoring framework.
The correspondence followed investigative reports revealing that cryptocurrency transactions exceeding $1 billion flowed through Binance to entities associated with Iran during 2024 and 2025.
Binance had committed to implementing this monitoring framework in 2023 following guilty pleas to sanctions violations and anti-money-laundering regulatory breaches.
Binance’s native token declined 1.7% on Friday in response to this development.
Regarding traditional equities, U.S. futures displayed modest gains Friday morning. Futures contracts linked to the S&P 500 advanced 0.3%, Nasdaq 100 futures gained 0.5%, and Dow futures increased 0.2%.

Crude oil prices surged approximately 2% following the military confrontations. West Texas Intermediate crude registered sharp gains during after-hours trading sessions.
Market participants focused attention on Friday’s April employment report. Economic forecasters projected nonfarm payroll expansion of 65,000 positions, with unemployment anticipated to hold steady at 4.3%.
Corporate earnings announcements were scheduled for Friday from Toyota Motor, Sony, and Brookfield Asset Management.
