The tiny Caribbean island of Anguilla has found an unexpected source of revenue in the artificial intelligence boom.
As companies rush to acquire web addresses ending in .ai, Anguilla, which controls this domain, has seen a significant increase in its earnings from web domain registration fees.
In 2023, Anguilla’s income from .ai domain registrations quadrupled to $32 million, accounting for about 20% of the island’s total government revenue. This marks a substantial increase from previous years when domain-related income hovered around 5% of government revenue.
The surge in demand for .ai domains is directly linked to the rising interest in artificial intelligence technologies.
Major tech companies like Google and Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) are using .ai domains to showcase their AI services. Numerous AI startups have opted for .ai web addresses, often redirecting from their .com versions.
To manage this explosive growth, the Government of Anguilla has recently announced a partnership with Identity Digital, a U.S.-based domain management company. The agreement, signed on October 15, 2024, aims to improve the resilience and security of .ai web addresses while potentially increasing revenue for the Anguillan government.
Identity Digital, which also manages Australia’s .au domain, plans to migrate all .ai domain services to its systems by early 2025. The company’s Chief Strategy Officer, Ram Mohan, emphasized that this partnership will help defend against cyber threats and maintain the integrity of .ai domains.
Anguilla’s Premier, Ellis Webster, views this partnership as a way to ensure the sustainability and stability of the .ai domain market. However, he also cautioned against over-reliance on this income source, noting the unpredictable nature of tech trends.
The additional revenue from .ai domains is already being put to use in Anguilla. The government plans to finance several key projects, including the expansion of the island’s airport, free medical care for senior citizens, and the completion of a vocational technology training center at Anguilla’s high school.
Currently, there are over 533,000 .ai web domains, representing more than a tenfold increase since 2018. The International Monetary Fund has noted that this income will help diversify Anguilla’s economy, making it more resilient to external shocks.
The partnership with Identity Digital is expected to bring additional benefits. It will reduce reliance on Anguilla’s single internet cable for .ai website connections, instead utilizing Identity Digital’s globally distributed servers. This change is anticipated to significantly improve access speeds for .ai websites.
While Anguilla doesn’t currently have its own AI industry, Premier Webster expressed hope that the island might become an AI hub in the future. He acknowledged that Anguilla’s control of the .ai domain was largely a matter of chance, as the domain could have easily been assigned to nearby Antigua.
As the AI industry continues to grow, Anguilla’s .ai domain revenue is expected to rise further. Premier Webster even suggested that domain-related revenues could potentially double in the coming year.
