Help With Reducing Size Of System32 Folder

  • 8

I was attempting to determine why my Windows folder was 20 GB and found the system32 folder at 16 GB. Within this folder was a systemprofile\Local Settings\Temp folder at 15GB and within this Temp folder is a Gazillion Microsoft.NET Framework files.
Also, I noticed my automatic updates want to update Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 Security Update… (a total of 4 updates) everytime I shutdown (automatic updates are turned on).

Does anyone have any idea what’s going on and how I can fix this?

  1. I generally agree with the suggestion that picking off files is a risky business and to use a proper uninstall whenever possible. However, I have never had any issues in removing files from temp folders but it is at your own risk. If you should decide to go that way it is worth leaving them in the bin for a few days just to make sure there are no side affects.
