Dell PC Auto Restart At Same Time Every Day

  • 8

Good morning all,

Got a frustrating issue with my work PC. It restarts on it’s own at the same time every day (the event viewer usually says 5:53PM or 5:47PM). There are no scheduled tasks for system restarts. I’ve run virus scans and the system is clean, I’ve run Spybot S+D and it finds nothing.

The Event Viewer shows the following System event: Event #: 1074, Source: USER32

Description: The process winlogon.exe has initiated the restart of (computer name) for the following reason: No title for this reason could be found
Minor Reason: 0xff
Shutdown Type: reboot
Comment:

Windows has all available updates applied, we are firewalled, run AV software….this is a stumper. And it is highly annoying, as I am usually working on something right before I leave at 6 when Windows “pulls the rug out” so to speak. Any suggestions?

  1. You probably are having and external power problem. You might have an airconditioner, large motor, neon sign, or other large draw device in the building starting up at this same time every day (a neon sign on a timer, etc.) and causing a drop in voltage getting to your computer, causing the restart. If this is the case (whether you can find it or not) your best bet is to purchase a UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply) to plug your computer into (their not that expensive and could save lots of data in the long term) it. They have internal batteries so as well as protecting against power peaks like a surge protector does, it also can make up for voltage drops with power from the battery. And if properly sized, will allow you to run your computer and monitor for 10 or 20 minutes during a power failure so you can save work and properly shut down everything. I bought my first one back in 1996 when I had some sudden shut down problems that created problems in windows 95 back then, That solved my problems and I have purchased one for every computer I own since. Later at my recent job, they only used one on their server, even though I suggested it for all computers, and when a circuit breaker tripped, cutting out one computer, it caused other problems on the server anyway. That changed their minds quickly (outside tech help cost them more than the protective measures would have).
