Well, this is probably the inevitable follow-up to my last question, but I got my 3Com Etherlink III in the mail today, plugged it into the motherboard, and got myself underway. Unfortunately, even following a guide for setting things up to use TCP/IP protocols, things have come back and smacked me in the face. It took ages to even get networking to work, since for some reason IFSHLP.SYS wasn’t installed. After reinstalling Windows, I finally got networking to start, but the results weren’t what I’d hoped. I got the following two error messages:
“Your network adapter MS$ELNK3 is not working properly. You may need to set it up again. For more information, see “Troubleshooting” in your “Workgroup Add-On User’s Guide.”
The following error occurred while loading protocol number 0.
Error 58: The network has responded incorrectly. You may need to reconfigure the protocol using Network Setup. If your computer is a portable, make sure it is connected to its docking station.”
I’m assuming the first problem is some sort of driver issue, but Windows came standard with support for this card so I can’t see how that’d be the problem. The second is a mystery to me. Is it possible that it’s just not compatible with modern-style internet? I wouldn’t think so since I have heard of people getting these things online, but hell, what do I know?
It contains updated ELNK3.386, and at 673KB could even fit on a 720 floppy.
