If the keyboard does not work at all then you cannot make any BIOS changes to enable legacy USB support that would allow a USB keyboard to work at boot.

Since you say you are getting a CMOS error at startup as well the only thing you can do at this stage is to reset the CMOS.

Disconnect mains power. Move CMOS reset jumper to the reset position. Press start button. ( Nothing should happen )

Return the jumper to the run position, reconnect mains power and try to startup. If you continue to experience CMOS errors and the keyboard still doesn’t work then your motherboard is probably toast.

If you cannot identify the CMOS reset jumper then you can achieve a reset by removing the CMOS battery for 30sec ( While mains power is disconnected)

First of all, with regards, I understand you are just switching to a Mac. 🙂

Files that *cannot* be opened on a Mac without dual-boot support, an emulator, or Wine on Mac include Windows executables (.exe), dynamic link libraries (.dll), or related files. Oddly enough, Safari 4+ can open .hta applications with ease.

The file you are trying to open is on that list as well. It is called a symbolic link in UNIX terms, hence where it got the extension .lnk from–it really should be .link, but this originated from Windows 95, where only three-letter extensions were allowed. On Windows, it is kindly masked over as an icon which looks like the one for the real program, with a shortcut arrow on it. A shortcut link would not help you in this case, because it is only a *link* to the real program, which without the methods I mentioned, will not run.

Even if I could assist you in opening a shortcut, it would not help. What we need to do is to open the program that you want, and make an alias to it (which, by the way, is Apple’s way of making a shortcut–only with a lot more stability, because in OS X they are much more powerful due to UNIX inherency.)

Let me know what program, exactly, you desperately need to open…

Glad to work with you. If you found this answer to be helpful, please give it a +1. Feel free to post back for additional questions.

Scroll down on the window the pops up>Show advanced options>Set IP Settings to Static>Scroll down to IP Address.
This field should be prepopulated (in grey writing) with your current IP.

    Hi,
One of the problems with looking up and matching dates is that Excel stores times in the same variable as the date.

If some of your date values also contain times, there will not be a match.

Two cells formatted as dd/mm/yy may show 10/Jan/10
but one of them is midnight and the other is noon – you can’t tell by looking at the date formatted cell.
    10/Jan/2010 at midnight is 40198.00
    10/Jan/2010 at noon is 40198.50

Try formating your dates as numbers and see if there are any decimal values ‘hidden’ in the cells.

If the values in the cells are not around 40000 (assuming recent dates), but still show as a date, then Excel hasn’t recognized the cell as a date. So some cells are text that is in a date style, while others are numbers recognized by Excel as dates and showing as a date due to formatting. So again – no match.

One way to handle the time issue is to compare the integer parts of the numbers only.

Create a new column to the right of your dates, before the text and use a formula =int(A1), to ensure that you get only the integer (whole number) part. Do your lookup on this new column using =VLOOKUP(INT(A9),B!$A$2:$B$20,2,FALSE), so you compare the integer part of the date in cell A9 with the integer values in your new column.

    Regards

First go to the mfg’s web site and download and install all of the latest drivers for your system.
Second, uninstall any programs that you never use, most manufactures include a lot of software that they are paid to put there and you have no need for. This is especially true for antivirus software. If there is a trial version on the machine and you install your own preferred antivirus program without uninstalling what they put there, there will be a conflict.
Third, A lot of software is set to start with Windows because they feel that it should be instantly available when (if ever) you need it quickly. The problem with this is that when there are a lot of these programs running all of the time, it actually slows everything down by wasting system resources. If you have programs that you use and do not want to uninstall them but do not use them all of the time as soon as you start Windows, look into their settings and try to set them NOT to start with Windows but only when you want them. If there are any remaining that still start with Windows, run msconfig and go to the Start Tab and uncheck any except your antivirus program and anything marked as Microsoft, Apply and restart the machine.
Fourth, Install and Update Malwarebytes (Free version, uncheck the trial of the paid for version). Check the setting to scan for root kits (place check mark) and run the scan. This program will pick up on many nasties that your antivirus program has missed. It only scans manually when you launch it and is a good tool to run once a week or once a month and when you feel something is not right with your system. Remove anything it finds.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Yes, it’s possible a power surge could have fried some, or all, of the components on your motherboard. This is why a good quality surge protector/surge suppressor is always worth the $20 to $30 they cost. It’s worth noting, most of those devices are a “one shot” deal in that, if they do indeed protect from a surge, then they’ve done their job and need to be replaced.

It is unlikely your network interface was fried by a surge when there is one or more devices upstream of it and those components weren’t fried. Which is to say, since it plugs into a router and the router isn’t toasted off, the power surge didn’t come into the interface from the router.

It’s also unlikely a surge through the computer’s power connection caused the network interface to fry. You’ll notice I said “unlikely” and not “impossible”

Having said all that, from what you’re telling me, you could very well have a problem with the device. To check, I would uninstall it from Device Manager and then reboot and let windows “find” it again and reinstall it. Check and ensure you have the most up-to-date drivers installed and see if it doesn’t work. If not, then it’s possible it’s fried.

The good news is, if your computer has a free expansion slot, it only costs about $15 for a decent NIC (network interface card) and they’re easy to install. Simply shut your PC off, unplug it, open the case, remove the cover from the exansion slot and install the card while keeping your body grounded to the frame of the case so as to avoid an electromagnetic discharge. Typically when working inside a computer, I keep my forearm in contact with the frame of the case. Always touch the frame before touching anything inside the case or pulling the new component out of the antistatic bag.

It matters not how straight the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,

I am the captain of my soul.
