If you have an eMachines restore disk, it will no longer work & you have have to come up with a *real* copy of Windows, then completely wipe the drive & start from scratch.

    3. buy or build a new computer that uses standard parts & can be easily upgraded.

My memory is that with my iPad/iPhones I can connect to my assorted computers (Mac/Windows) via usb, and like you transfer data; but they cannot actually get online that way. My router is cat-5 (and of course wifi) only so to test out a usb connection to my router isn’t possible.

The reason is that the IBM BIOS will likely only support the CPUs on the list. Be aware that if your laptop has Intel HD graphics, upgrading the CPU will not upgrade graphics. Your CPU has the HD5500, as does all the other CPUs listed.

I guess you know this from the manual:

“To select a boot device manually, press the <F9> key when the
BenQ logo appears on the screen during system startup. The
Boot Menu will appear. Use the up and down arrow keys to select a boot device, and then press <Enter> to confirm”

If it’s going ahead and booting into windows it likely means you pressed the key too late. Start tapping it as soon as you turn it on.

To have a USB keyboard work during bios setup you need to previously have ‘legacy USB support’ enabled in ‘advanced configuration’ from the main bios menu (F2 during BenQ logo).

Here’s a downnload for the manual if you don’t have it:
