I have exactly the same issue with a Gateway LX-6810. After careful observation of this event many times, I think it is somewhat safe to rule out the video card that came stock with the system. I believe the problem is with the power supply. Having said that, there may be two possible causes. 1. The 3 and/or 5 volt sections of the power supply may be showing signs of age and in the early stages of failure. Most of the items that you can hear running are the 12 volt items. 2. The LX-6810 came with two software applications that affect operation of the power supply — Smart Copy and Smart Launcher. I think it was silly of Gateway to set up that arrangement, but it is what it is. If you have used a tune-up type utility to disable these, see if you can reenable both with the same utility. If you have not uninstalled these applications, you can also do this manually by placing a shortcut to the executable for both in the Start Up folder. I can offer additional directions on this manual procedure if you need them. If the LX 6810 power button blinks when the system is in sleep mode, then Smart Copy and Smart Launcher are most likely properly set up. If the power button goes black (off) when in sleep mode, reenable SC and SL to load at computer boot up by using the manual method I just suggested. Your feedback on these suggestions would be most appreciated. ***** One more thought— Have you added any additional controller cards to your system (for example, a USB 3.0 controller card)?? Many of these will tap into the power supply’s 5 volt line and randomly cause unusual losses of adequate voltage at other points in the system. You have to remember that notebooks and netbooks require custom drivers from the notebook or netbook manufacturer to match the custom-made hardware. Samsung has no Windows 8 custom graphics driver or chipset driver for your netbook.
You seem to have been lucky with the rest of the hardware if everything else works, but I can’t see how you are going to fix the fix the brightness problem if you insist on using an unsupported Windows version.
You should have checked to see what Samsung drivers were available before upgrading to Windows 8.

If you can’t boot up and access your files even now, download a Ubuntu ISO file; save to a hard drive; burn it to a DVD. Boot your system with that… It’s a Linux OS and will allow you to access the hard drive and thus your files – and copy them to DVD. It does not instal itself to your hard drive.
