I have noticed that sometimes a swapped monitor loses color and only shows a monochrome screen until the PC is rebooted. But again, no damage.
For the most part the OS doesn’t care about the monitor. It just sets up the video card it’s attached to and of course that’s done when the OS loads.
I wouldn’t worry about it. Think of all the times a monitor cable comes loose and is plugged back in while everything is running. If that caused problems we’d hear about it and I never have.

The downside here is that the slim case design of the system means that even though there is a PCI-Express graphics slot, the space and the very low 220 watt power supply pretty much only allow the most basic of graphics cards to be installed such that there is almost no benefit to adding a dedicated card.
I doubt that cat hair is jamming it. Is there any activity on the drive, lights blinking etc, like it's trying to read the dvd? Try opening the case and make sure it's getting power. If all else fails, remove the drive and take it apart to remove the disk and get a new one.

Did the OPTIPLEX also emitted a series of beeps during start-up? If you also heard a burst of three beeps followed by two beeps followed by four beeps, it means Keyboard Controller test failure. In layman term, the keyboard controller chip on the motherboard has failed. You have three options: 1. SoRead more

Equally you may have large smoothing capacitor a little under stress, not happy. Either way “something” is getting a little warm – which is why (possibly) it stops(?) when the cooling fan operates.
I suggest it would be wise(r) to replace it – whilst under warranty. It does sound a little like all is not well with it, maybe not upto par.

i disabled quick-boot mode. i don’t know if this had any bearing on the solution. i would sure like to know specifically what disabling/enabling quick-boot mode does.
i set the correct time in bios>general tab and pressed f10 to save changes.
