You are also making the assumption that the motherboard can take 2Gb memory modules. A dangerous assumption to make. 512 Mbs modules may well be the maximum the motherboard can take, Even if the motherboard could take 2GB memory modules, there is a maximum the motherboard can support regardless of how much memory you can physically install.
As JohnR said, you need to know the motherboard details before anything can be said about memory.

If you have a direct connection from modem to a PC and that PC is getting internet then the first step to take is determine exactly the connection settings. I don’t know whether the method is different in WIN7 as I use XP and in a commandprompt I run ipconfig /all to find out all the details of Gateway IP, & Subnet mask, DNS details etc.
Write all these down.
Then make connection from modem to router WAN port and from router LAN port to PC in order to configure the router.
Read the router manual to find out how to log into it’s admin interface, and if it does not automatically detect the internet you may need to manually configure the settings according to what you wrote down earlier. Get a wired connection working first then look at the wireless configuration.
Modems don't have an IMEI number. That only applies to Mobile Phones. You find the IMEI number by typing *#06# on the key pad. As Modems don't have a keypad that could be difficult.
