If it is the actual case, including the soldering etc. on the usb connector, either get another case and install the drive in that. Or as you are thinking... get a sata to usb adapter kit. These can be dock style - place drive in dock and connect via usb to a computer; or small set of cables and conRead more

I have a cable kit for both sata and eide; have used it a few times with no problems. But a “permanent” case/enclosure is better if wishing to use drive regularly, and/travel with it… So I’d advise a suitable external case.
Actual drive physical size determines case options. Some 2.5 ins dives are a wee bit too thick for some cases – so wise to check your drive dimensions and any possible case/enclosure with that in mind.
