I received a .cwk file by email and was able to open it by changing the extension to .doc; and word opened it but with some gobbledigook at top and bottom.

That is probably the formatting instructions that ClarisWorks used,
font type, line spacing, paragraph marks, etc. etc.
If you need to actually convert the file, then it is my understanding that
AbiWord (Freeware) has a plugin that will convert.
