Upgraded CPU, PC Boot Problem.

  • 2

I have a ASRock 4CoreDual-VSTA motherboard with a Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8 Ghz. This cpu came with the PC and works perfectly. I tried to upgrade to a Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4 GHz Q6600 CPU. When the PC now boots, it either freezes on a black screen with a blinking cursor or it freezes on the Windows XP boot screen and cannot boot into SafeMode. I have checked the ASRock website. The cpu is compatable with the board. I have also installed all the latest chipset drivers, updated the BIOS and reset the BIOS and loaded defaults in BIOS. The BIOS shows the quad cpu and the updated bios version. The cpu is not overheating, staying around 37 degrees. I ran the Intel
diagnosis tool on the quad cpu and it passes. I install the older core 2 duo and things working fine again. Any ideas? I’m going crazy here!

This cpu is listed as being compatible with this board. Just wondering why I cannot get it to work properly. As for my specs:

cpu: intel core 2 duo 1.8 Ghz
ram: 2 gig ddr2
video: radeon X1650
HD: 250 gig sata

The bios has been reset by jumper and removing battery,

Thanks.

  1. Thanks for the reply. I have put the Intel Core 2 Duo back in my PC. Working fine. I have had it with trying to get the Quad working on this board. Thanks for the board recommendations. I think I will purchase one of the boards you have listed. I thought this ASRock board was a good one, but I guess I was wrong. Too many compatability issues. I remember having a problem getting the video card to work with this board also. Thanks again.

  2. Sometimes a board is listed as supporting a CPU, but there are often multiple version numbers. It is very possible you have an early version of the board and only some of the later versions may support some of the later processors fully. ((This is just a possibility, but not an uncommon one out there.))
    Look at this board (w/graphics):

or this board -> better (no graphics though):

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

  3. If you do some googling, you’ll find numerous hits regarding instability issues with the Q6600 & 4CoreDual-VSTA. “Crossover” boards that have multiple support options (DDR, DDR2, AGP, PCI-e) are almost never a good choice. To make it worse, it’s based on a VIA chipset. Looking at the specs, the PCI-e only runs at x4 & SATA is the early 1.5Gb/s version. You would have been better off buying a new board rather than a new CPU.
