I try to download the SP1 from the update site, it starts to install, gets to 2% then jumps to 74% and then finishes and tells me it could not load all the components. (Explorer,Offline Browser, Outlook Express don't update). I have tried loading individual components, repairing the explorer, resuming install and all that it will tell me is that I have the correct files but they wont install. HELP!!!!
from the above search one down explains it better;
Open Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer but Windows Explorer as in the file management program). From there go to C:/Program Files/Internet Explorer/Uninstall Information. Right click on the Uninstall Information folder and select Properties. Uncheck the Hidden box and then click OK or Apply. A confirmation screen will come up. Select the Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files button. This will unhide all of the files in the Uninstall Information folder. You then need to move (not delete) all of these files to another folder that is empty. Any one will do or make a new temporary folder. It doesn't really matter just as long as the Uninstall Information folder is empty. Reboot your computer. After rebooting double check and make sure that the Uninstall Information folder is empty. You should then be able to install all of the troublesome components (hopefully). If everything goes well you can then move all of those files that you moved previously back into the Uninstall Information
Super duper! Works like a charm. I had struggled for days on this. Had looked all over MS support site without success. Did I just miss it or is MS unaware? Thanks much.
M$ 'techs' in Australia here were of no use whatsoever saying that there were no known problems with the update. There is still no response from them on the issue and they still suggest it was either a hardware conflict or a software (not theirs of course) issue that was causing the problem. Go figure.......
Actually... This usually happens if you install IE 6, then do an Over-the-top install of Windows ME, then try to install IE 6 again. You will end up with different file versions for explorer/internet explorer and a VERY confused regsitry.
Another solution to the problem is to do the upgrade to IE 6 in increments. First install IE 5.5 SP2, then install IE 6.
It's an MS problem and they know about it, but because of the way the registry works and the fact that when you upgrade IE you are basically upgrading your operating system (there are migration files and hundreds of registry keys involved), I doubt MS will ever fix this. I don't think there is a way to fix it... at least not on the 9x platform. An over the top install works much better on the NT plaform, but you can still run into unexpected problems.
I did the same thing as 'DOG' did. I tried to install it in every manner with only Explorer and the System Tray running.
I then followed the advice of Response #2 'W' and it went without a problem. I did take the precaution of stopping everything before I executed the setup. I didn't try to stop any of my programs from coming up on the reboot.
I had the same problem as Dog.....and MS was giving me the run around for days.I went a little further though and disabled all Norton programs and deleted the files out of the folder.The install worked great and everything is running fine. "W" whoever you are,THANKS
