During the migration of one server to a new one, I was trying to configure a workstation to access the new server and was in the process of changing domains. Something went terribly wrong, now nobody can log in to the Win2K box. I have tried every combination of username/passwords and nothing works. I can't log in as local admin either. I can't get by the log-in screen. It doesn't give any options for domains or anything. If I click the more options, it just gives the option of logging in with a dial up connection.
Is there anyway to bypass the login to fix things, or a way to reset the user/pass altogether?
Please help, I don't want to have to reinstall, as there is some data that I forgot to back up before attempting the migration.
Is there any hope?

No hope if you don't have the password for 'administrator'

Yes, you can get in, although this method will eliminate ALL users and wipe out the Admin password.

Open the box and remove the hard drive, slave the HD into another computer and search for a SAM(with no extension) file.

The one you want is in the C:\WINNT\System32\config. Delete the file and put the HD back in the original box after you change the jumpers back to master.

When you boot it up there will only be Administrator available and the password must be left blank.

This at least gets you into the machine. Let us know if you need more help getting it back on the network.

Any time, it just drives me nuts when people say your only recourse is to "format & reinstall".
