Comment: I was recently running windows XP professional on my Compaq 1900 laptop when my hard drive crashed, so I searched on ebay and bought the exact same model MK6014MAP (Toshiba). When i got the drive I put it in my laptop and turned it on. It didn't automatically recognized the hard drive so I put the Compaq recovery disk in to help the BIOS recognize the drive, it worked and I was able to boot from the windows XP pro setup disk. While setup was formatting my hard drive it crashed at 94%!!! So i turned off my computer but this time the BIOS didn't recognize the hard drive. So I put in the Compaq recovery disk in again and the BIOS recognized it once again but this time my Laptop won't Boot from the XP cd it just gave me a black screen. I tried booting from the cd with the hard drive removed and it works perfectly!! Can some body please help me! I love this laptop and can't live without it!!!

Reply: (edit)I know nothing about laptops but it sounds a bit like there could be a powersupply problem. Like it cannot handle the load of both drives. Since you have the same model HDD it shouldn't be a resource conflict unless you changed any bios settings. Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him to fish and you feed him for life.

Reply: (edit)No, its not a power supply problem because i was able to run both drives before and i can hear both drives spinning. And the computer was built to run these two drives.

Reply: (edit)Powersupplies have been known to develop problems. I know because I had one blow recently (In a desktop unit). When it failed it took the motherboard, CPU and graphics card with it. Just because it worked before your harddrive crash is no guarantee it doesn't have a problem now that you have a new harddrive. It may have had a problem before that contributed to the initial crash. Are you able to run a HDD diagnostic? If your laptop doesn't have a floppy drive then you can make a bootable CD with diagnostic tools. I've used Nero to make bootable CDs. Perhaps the Compaq recovery disk has a diagnostics program yo can use. Never seen inside a laptop. Do the devices connect with riboncables like desktop units? Check and reseat all these connections. Sorry if none of this helps. Maybe there is a "reset bios defaults" thing you can do that will help. Is there anything in your manual about that? Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Reply: (edit)The Compaq emergency CD relies on the partion d which i deleted when i first installed windows xp (this os lasted 3 weeks untill my hard drive crashed) I don't have a floppy drive. What utilitys do you suggest? u can't get inside the laptop becuase there are big metal plates shielding it but i'm almost positive there aren't ribon cables. And there isn't anything wronge with the connection because other cd's load.

Reply: (edit)It does not have a single thing to do with the bios or the power supply. It is in the drive. If the bios doesn't pick it up, then the computer doesn't know the drive exists. What you did was bought a bad hard drive. I suggest spending a couple extra dollars, and have compaq ship you one. If you are still under warranty compaq WILL INDEED fill your repair request. You will have to send your laptop in to Compaq, but it will be returned to you if you choose to go with the warranty. Very small price to pay, deal without it for a week or two when you're getting a free hard drive installed for free. Just call them, their number is located on their site. http://www.compaq.com. Laptops are very tricky, not like desktops. They power supplys are built-in to the motherboard so it doesn't work like a desktop. You just need to see about the warranty. That's your main bet. Any newer-model Compaqs (within a year old) you should be able to have fixed over a warranty. If this doesn't work please e-mail me and I will get you set on track with the new hard drive thing. ~Wes~

Reply: (edit)Another thing, With compaq you just tell them what your PC is doing and they will say since it's defecctive they will take a look at it if you send it in and they will fix everything that's possibly wrong with it, and run the windows xp back on it. they can pull up that exact computer and reinstall everything that came with it the exact way it came when you got it out of the box. ~Wes~

Reply: (edit)First of all if you didn't read my first post i said i was able to go into windows setup once. What I fogot to mention was that one try before the computer crashed while formatting i got to 94% of copying files. So the hard drive should not be dead. And the bios does reconize the hard drive. Also this machine is almost 4 years old so there is no warranty. And i couldn't possibly imagine what it would cost to have them fix it after the warranty has ended.
