Hi everyone I know my ram is small compared to most but....all I really use my computer for is very basic stuff. The thing is that I keep my computer well updated with win updates but this last one took a good chunck out of my disk space :(. I then thought to go into start then search and look up IE SP2 and omg there was a slew of them. When windows installs IE SP3 is it not suppose to clean out sp2? It seems it has not I need to know if this is correct and if not how do I clean every spec of it out. Thanks in advance.
The amount of RAM you have has no bearing on the number of files on your hard drive. Look at My Computer and see what the total size your drive is and how much free space is available. Post those figures back here.
Do you have multiple partitions on your hard drive? Your total size for your WinXP partition is kind of small. If you have programs installed to this partition I suggest you move them to a different partition.
I have local drive c that I have everything to do with windows on.Plus anything I download like java is on there ccleaner ect. Then I have Data drive 1 (D) and Data Drive2 (E)d is empty and e I usually keep for wmp video jokes that friends send me.
Well, my point in asking was that hard drive space is so inexpensive these days IMO I see no reason to worry about even one GB of files. The entire SP2 was in the 200MB range so even if ALL those files remained I don't see that as a problem myself.
You didn't state the capacity of your D & E drives. I may be in the minority here but my belief if this. If MSoft didn't see a future need to retain the files in question they would have removed them.
I don't believe those files present any issues related to performance either.
As far as SP3 totally replacing SP2 goes, I would guess that if a SP2 update was still valid there would be no need to replace it with on labeled SP3.
Why is D empty? Do you have programs installed on C? Do you create backups of your system on a regular basis?
If you feel you don't need to retain any of the updates others have provided the means to remove them.
capacity on d is 14.6 GB seems high to me but thats how it was set up for me.and e is 14.8 GB also high. But I am not that secure in messing with that stuff and my friend has moved out west : ( and here yes they charge an arm and a leg to do anything to a computer that is why I am trying my best to learn stuff.
You didn't answer about backups. The partition sizes seem OK to me. If you install ONLY the OS and core programs to the C partition you will have plenty of slack space for defragging and the swap file.
All your programs could be installed on the D partition and all your personal files on the E partition.
If you create backups/images of each partition separately you can always restore as needed.
Each partition changes at a diffferent pace so backup intervals are also different.
Using Ghost or Acronis true image to create a backup image of your C partition should fit on ONE DVDR. I assume you have an optical disk burner installed?
You can buy Acronis for less than $31 with shipping. See the link below.
If your 'My Documents' folder is kinda large, you could move it to one of your other drives. This can be done using TweakUI, in the 'My Computer' 'Special Folders' area.
