Subject: Network cable unplugged problem |
Comment: I installed XP Home and now I get a frequent "Network cable unplugged" error message which disconnects me from my broadband internet @Home connection. The cables ARE connected. I have an SMC EtherPower 8432T ethernet adapter which is identified as an Intel 21041 PCI based Ethernet (generic) card. I can't find specific drivers. Anybody else getting this bogus message?

Reply: (edit)It sounds like your network card is set to shut itself off when there isn't activity. It's a power saving feature. If you go to the network card properties in the control panel there should be a setting such as, "turn network card off to save power" or something. Disable it.

Reply: (edit)I eventually managed to get my network card repaired myself. You can try this maybe: Make sure that both network cards on both machines are set to the same speed which should not be "Auto" or something similar. If you open NETWORK CONNECTIONS, right-click on your LAN and choose PROPERTIES. On the GENERAL tab click the CONFIGURE button and then click on the ADVANCED tab. In the PROPERTY box, select an option that should be similar to either LINE SPEED or LINK SPEED and in the VALUE box, select an option like 10MBPS or TP FULL DUPLEX or something similar. Configure these settings on both computers and this should hopefully solve your problem. Lhyam.
