Comment:
I have a P4, 1.6GHZ, 40GHD, 256RAM, Win Me that won't go into total shutdown when I go to Start-Shutdown. It will go through the motions and the front panel power led as well as the HD led will go out, but the case fan (hooked to 12 volt power) will not stop turning. I can press the power button and nothing happens. Only when I press the Reset button will the unit come back on. I have downloaded the 'Windows IDE Hardrive Cache Package' which is suppose to present a 2 second delay for fast processors. Also, when I try to go into Hibernate, the screen will go blank for a second, and go right back to the desktop-never going into Hibernate. Any help appreciated. Bruce
I do not know if I can be of much help but try starting up in SAFE MODE and then shut down. If the computer fully shuts off, it may be your video driver, ide cache program or another device driver (lan card with wake-up enabled for example. It is a pain but try removing devices with thier drivers one at a time
You might be able to shut it down by holding the Start-Shutdown button in for 8 seconds. Beyond that, I'm not sure why your machine hangs, but mine does the same thing on a very infrequent basis. Almost like it skips over the code instructions to shut the fan, etc. off.
I have the same problem. Mine always does a restart. Through process of elimination I have determined that the problem is my video drivers. I have ATI All In Wonder and their drivers are for Win 98 but they say they will work with ME. They do for everything else but the shutdown is a pain in the butt.
I had this same problem. I replaced all the drivers (Video, sound card, chipset, modem, and mouse) but nothing worked. About a month later a pop-up window told me there was an update for Real Media player. I got the update and have had no problem shutting down since. It was RealPlayer the whole time. Try uninstalling or upgrading your version.
When ever I use Ctrl/Alt/Delete to close all running programs except system tray and explorer, my system will also hang at shut down . To this date I still cannot figure out why . I think it maybe is related to a anti-virus application that is running in the background ?
