Reply: (edit)If you have already done all the WinME updates go to your MotherBoard's home page and check for the latest BIOS & Drivers. What MB do you have?

Reply: (edit)For the HP that won't shut down, that appears to be a common problem (according to tech support) for newer HPs and Compaqs...has nothing to do with ME, which I can verify 'cause I've had ME, '98 and NT Workstation on mine at different times. The only "fix" I'm aware of, and I'd love to know if there's another, is to hold your power button in for 8-10 seconds. This will power down the system. Good luck!

Reply: (edit)I had a similar problem on my HP system before and called@HP's tech support - they gave me a solution but not an elegant one. I had to edit my start-up tab which popped up after executing "msconfig". Besides this problem, I am running into other issues which is making me think about going back to Win 98.

Reply: (edit)I'm not sure WHAT program(s) cause(s) this, but I know how to fix it. Follow this EXACTLY and make NO OTHER CHANGES to your registry, or you could create more problems! Go to the START menu, select RUN. In the window after OPEN, type REGEDIT. Click OK. Go to the RegEdit menu bar, click EDIT (a window will drop down) and click FIND Type FASTREBOOT. Click on FIND NEXT. Wait. (It may take a while.) You should see the name FastReboot with the associated data reading "1". RIGHT-click on FastReboot, select MODIFY. The "1" should now be highlighted. Press the number zero (0). Click OK. Close the Registry Editor. Now TURN OFF YOUR MACHINE!

Reply: (edit)Go into safe mode and remove all of your drivers except for anything USB and you HDD controllers, reboot the computer, when you reboot hold down F1 and reset the BIOS defaults (F5), then reboot and try shutting down, it should work.
