Comment:

I am attempting to upgrade from Windows 98 SE to Windows XP Pro. I insert the CD and the upgrade starts but after a couple of minutes I begin receiving error messages. **An exception OE has occurred at 0028:C004BC69 in VxD VFAT(01) + 0009B41
**A fatal exception OE has occurred at 0028:C0005338 in VXD VMM (01) + 00004338.

Does anyone have a solution?
Thanks for the help.

How big is the HDD? Are you doing a complete reformat & installation of XP or are you attempting an in-place upgrade? Upgrade is NOT the way to go. BTW, it would help if you'd post the model # of your Presario.

As a side note, do you have all the XP compatible drivers for the chipset, sound, video, network, etc?

... if the answer is YES I have.

... I'd say format the dam thing forget about "upgrade from 98" and "upgrade with a fresh XP install"

... that's my suggestion ma'am

There is an update from Microsoft to fix a related problem: http://download.microsoft.com/downl...

You can try installing that before doing the upgrade.

Additionally, you should try booting from the Windows XP cd, and doing an upgrade that way.

From the sound of things the XP install failed, but it has reverted back to 98 and you can run the 98 O/S.

If so, run this and it will outline potential problems with any hardware and installed software on the machine;

From personal experience, XP can be quite slow with only 384 MB of RAM, as it will be swapping to the disk frequently. Either upgrade to 512 MB, or consider Windows 2000 instead, which runs much better with less RAM. If neither is an option, then stick with 98 SE.

In any event, you can always dual boot 98 SE easily with 2000 or XP. This way you can see for yourself which OS(es) will run best for your needs.
