Can someone explain to me why the netmask is not set properly on my network interface after reboot in this case:

/etc/netmasks:
10.64.0.0 255.255.254.0
10.50.0.0 255.255.254.0
10.7.0.0 255.255.0.0
10.8.0.0 255.255.0.0

ifconfig -a:
lo0: flags=2001000849<UP,LOOPBACK,RUNNING,MULTICAST,IPv4,VIRTUAL> mtu 8232 index 1
inet 127.0.0.1 netmask ff000000
bge0: flags=1000843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,MULTICAST,IPv4> mtu 1500 index 2
inet 10.7.200.1 netmask ffff0000 broadcast 10.7.255.255
bge1: flags=1000843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,MULTICAST,IPv4> mtu 1500 index 3
inet 10.50.54.31 netmask ff000000 broadcast 10.50.55.255

Then if I modify /etc/netmasks to be:
10.7.0.0 255.255.0.0
10.8.0.0 255.255.0.0
10.0.0.0 255.255.254.0

then reboot, ifconfig -a now gives:
lo0: flags=2001000849<UP,LOOPBACK,RUNNING,MULTICAST,IPv4,VIRTUAL> mtu 8232 index 1
inet 127.0.0.1 netmask ff000000
bge0: flags=1000843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,MULTICAST,IPv4> mtu 1500 index 2
inet 10.7.200.1 netmask ffff0000 broadcast 10.7.255.255
bge1: flags=1000843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,MULTICAST,IPv4> mtu 1500 index 3
inet 10.50.54.31 netmask fffffe00 broadcast 10.50.55.255

What I mean to say is, in the first case it is not set properly. But when I make the change to /etc/netmasks it then gets the correct netmask.

I assume you do not have a dhcp server setting these so my wild guess is....

"Modify the /etc/inet/netmasks file, if you are manually configuring network clients. Or, supply the netmask to the Solaris installation program."

http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/81...

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you peanut.
