Comment: I have added an additional 18 GB hard drive to my solaris 7 server and it detects it just fine. I can also go into the format utility and set up the partitions but I cannot write a label to the VTOC. I am new to solaris is it necessary to format a new drive before creating partitions or should my new drive be able to save its changes to the VTOC?

Reply: well...it has to be formated according to solaris standerds..if not then format it and see how it goes. Otherwise i don't think u need to format it again and again to make new partitions. your new drive should be able to save changes to vtoc without getting formatted provided it is formated fr solaris standereds.
