Comment: So as far as xinetd goes... what is the safest way to ensure that dangerous protocols aren't running all the time? I actually noticed that ftp was running when my buddy started sending me random files during the day. Hilarious. I've gone into the config files in /etc/xinetd.d/[configfilehere] and changed the disable line with VI Editor. Anything else in particular I should do? Open to suggestions. Also, if I wanted to run FTP... say across the internet, is there a safe way to do so or should I be using another protocol altogether? -- Yeah, Rick. I've been meaning to tell you. You should probably lay low for a while. You're probably wanted for murder. --

Reply: (edit)http://forums.fedoraforum.org/forum... May shed some light on a ( " More Secure " ) way of setting up a FTP server, As far as the xinetd.d way of handling the services, Should be fine,,,, However In the System,,, ( if you have a Desktop Installed ) You should also have a services manager program that xinetd.d hands over program start-ups to,,,, ( in Gnome, ) From the top tool bar, System < Administration < Services, I would just use it,,, And,,,,, You may want to look into also installing ,,,, " Deny Hosts " and configure it for your Server,,, Your question covers a broad area,,,, and there are alot more questions to be asked,,,, than can be asked very quickly or responded to very quickly, without , the right kind of INFO ,,, Anyway,,, Good luck Huh !!! Reply: (edit)For the Record,,,, You may just choose to disable , SSH ,, that should be the sshd service, ( afterthought, ) I've been scanned having that service running , and had the service , attempted to be Brute Forced attacked,,, ( Deny Hosts ) is of value in having that service running , Cause then if too many attempts are made the Originating IP is blocked,,, Configuration Options also allow for the RSYNC ing , of the offending address to be uploaded to a server banning that address from connecting with Like Servers,,,, MSI 845e mb 1 gb ram and a p4 2.4n running fedora 7 xp ,win 2000 advanced server and win 98 SE alot to learn and I know so little !!!!
