Comment: Our area had a powercut yesterday and now my computer seems to not be working, which was on at the time. The powercut itself was weird, it went off, then came back on and repeated about 3 times then stayed off for about an hour. When i turn my PC on, the monitor does not do anything except the light flashes on and off to show its on but not got a connection. The DVD drive has a constant green light showing and no computer beebs happen. This is as much i know regarding the computer. However this morning i put the VGA cable of the monitor into my laptop and the monitor is working. So the problem may lie within the graphics card. Basically if theres a way in which i can test each component to see if its working that would be good so i dont have to buy a brand new computer.

Reply: (edit)I recently worked on a system that suffered similar electrical surge damage. ( Low voltage can be just as damaging as high spikes) Was the system connected to a surge protected powerstrip? Doesn't matter now since the damage is done. In the one I worked on the motherboard had failed. It had the same symptoms you describe. Of course that wasn't my first thought. Initially I suspected the powersupply so tested with another PSU I had handy. Also was able the test his PSU in another machine to confirm it was OK. Bottom line is until you can test with a known good powersupply there is no way to tell what if anything else has been damaged Goin' Fishin' (Some day)
