Comment: Hi all guy´s. I want to do the characters of the DOS apears smaller than normal, like when you press the alt+F9 on the Norton Commander, or load edit /h. Is it possible? How can I do this?.In thia wayI can see long directories in an only one screen. Thanks. Best regards. If there is a possibility of several things going wrong, the one that will cause the most damage will be the one to go wrong.

Reply: (edit)On older versions of DOS, you needed certain display TSRs to be loaded in advance. Since you're using DOS 7.x, this functionality already exists out of the box. Try one of the following: C:\> MODE 80,43 C:\> MODE 80,50
You could even add either line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT or DOSSTART.BAT if you prefer it to default that way when you start pure DOS or exit to DOS, respectively.

Reply: (edit)As an addendum, the commands can be abbreviated by removing the number of columns (unless you're in the wide 40-column mode) as follows: MODE ,25 MODE ,43 MODE ,50
There are other handy variants, like MODE CO80, MODE BW40, and MODE MONO. These also work on older versions of DOS, without the need to load any TSRs in advance.

Reply: (edit)Glitchman: very thanks. Tonight I´ll try it. Yesterday I had tryed the above mentioned, setline.com. It doesn´t work propely, because it has a bug. When I exit from a DOS program like Adobe´s Acrobat for DOS, the display goes into normal mode. So it is nessesary to reload again. Also, it consumes 1K of memory. It is few, but... I have a doubt. For your suggestions, is it necessary to load ansi.sys, and/or display.sys, or not? Thanks to all. Osvaldo. Reply: (edit)It is not necessary to load ANSI.SYS or DISPLAY.SYS in DOS 7.x. The MODE commands work without any special prerequisites (but it's a different case with MS-DOS 6.22.)

Reply: (edit)Very thanks. Tonight I´ll try it. I´ve using MSDOS6.22 several year later, when I discover (thanks to this forum) DOS7.1. It has too much useful that then. Best regards Osvaldo. Reply: (edit)Glitchman: the mode 80,50 command works pretty. Very thanks. Osvsldo. If there is a possibility of several things going wrong, the one that will cause the most damage will be the one to go wrong.
