Comment: Ok, on my old IBM with it's MFM hard drive (I still use it cause it still works and does what I ask it to do, on time), and have always been told to "park" the HD before turning it off. But um, how do you park the HD? Typing in PARK does nothing.

Reply: (edit)Older MFM's do need to be parked (especially if you're getting ready to move the machine elsewhere). As Dave says, if it's an original PC, XT, or 286 with the original drive, it may require a specific executable to be used...

Reply: (edit)I downloaded the starter disk for that model--25start.tg0--and finally got it extracted. On it is a file named DPARKHDS.COM. I couldn't find any info about that file but it's got to be the drive parking program. If you have the starter disk then that file should be on it. Just copy it to your dos directory. (Well, check your dos directory first as it may already be there.) If you don't have the starter disk then send me your email address via a private message and I'll send the file.

Reply: (edit)Historical note. Zenith dos also had command park.com and it worked in other dos's. "Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, are in my top 10

Reply: (edit)Yeah, I started off with a packard bell 8088 running dos 3.3. I remember it had some kind of parking command. Without autoparking the landing zone--the cylinder where the parking command sent the read/write head--had to specified as part of the disk setup in bios. So you had to be sure to get it right. I don't know for sure, but I would think a parking program for a particular system and drive could be written for that drive only. That's why I was hesitant to recommend a generic parking program. Here's some additional info: http://www.storagereview.com/guide2... Hakemon, I haven't hear back. Do you need the file or not?

Reply: (edit)sorry, been busy the past time... i ran it, and it's weird.. the HD makes a single "whiir" sound instead of a "whiiiir whiir hum" when reading data.. but then the whole computer locks up.. not that it matters, cause im turning it off anyway :p

Reply: (edit)Once you park the hard drive it's not going to be doing anything until you restart the PC. Assuming it does restart OK then I guess the program is doing its job.
