Subject: IO.SYS & the hidden logo
Comment:

I'm just wondering if anyone has *any* information on where the hidden logo (logo.sys) is inside IO.SYS...is it compressed...or is it just encoded?

The IO.SYS from MS-DOS 6.22 is about 50k...so I'm tempted to think that it's not compressed at all...just encoded.

Anyway, if anyone has any ideas on where it is (or has already removed it!!!)...then let me know and we'll see if we can get it removed :)

Yeah, I have been messing with this for quite a while here and there. I have read that it is encoded in the IO.SYS. I have tried deleting specific parts of this file to get rid of it, but it's just hit and miss. No hits though.

XB They are talking about MS-DOS 7x here. The Windows Startup Logo is incoded into IO.SYS - You can turn it off via MSDOS.SYS but not delete it!

With the size of todays drives - Why bother?

OK I know - Becouse its there. LOL

What hidden logo?

Batfiles: The DOS batch file programming handbook

You have to edit msdos.sys (mind the read-only attribute) to prevent booting
to GUI. Change "BootGUI=1" to 0 then rename LOGOS.SYS and LOGOW.SYS found in
the windows folder. These are just plain old bitmap files with a different
extension. You may even want to get rid of the splash on boot by placing a
"LOGO=0" in the same section.

200k is quite a lot for a diskette! That's why I'd prefer using the Win ME version of IO.SYS as it's just over 100k. That logo can be "switched off" in MSDOS.SYS, but can anyone tell me how to get rid of the "Starting Windows..." message when booting from a diskette? With the Win 98 version of IO.SYS it's easy to find within the code, but in the ME version all "plain text" seems to be scrambled somehow. Does anyone have any idea of how to switch off this "Starting Windows Millennium Emergency Boot..." message?
