Reply: IO.SYS consists of many low-level routines needed for MS-DOS to function... in fact, replaces some of the ones in your computer's BIOS. Put it this way- it is half of the DOS operating system. There is no way you can run without it and DOS won't begin to load without it being there. Either you can put the first DOS setup disk in drive A and type A:\SYS A: C: which will copy IO.SYS MSDOS.SYS COMMAND.COM to drive C: or run A:\FORMAT C:/U/S that will copy them, too, after re-formatting the DOS drive. I have never heard of an 80MHz Intel processor (that doesn't mean there isn't one). Maybe your problem is that the processor is overclocked too high and you need to find out the speed it was intended to run, then adjust some settings on the mainboard- or maybe the hard disk controller is shoddy but I can't begin to tell without seeing it. You might open the case/tower, remove the heatsink (that little metallic square over the CPU that might have a small fan attached to it) and read exactly what is printed on the top then post it here- maybe someone can help you better then.

Reply: If you enter from A:\> SYS C:, and you can see the boot files when you enter ATTRIB, the problem might be the drive or some other files are corrupt. Run SCANDISK or CHKDSK to see what it says about the hard drive. What error messages do these Windows versions give you when they refuse to run? I don't know that it was Intel, but there were lots of 486DX4-80 computers around 1994.
