Use Edit.com to open c:\config.sys

You'll need three lines to manage memory in DOS

device=c:\dos\himem.sys
device=c:\dos\emm386.exe noems
DOS=high,umb

The first line should be, uh, first ;-)

Of course, the himem.sys & emm386.exe files need to be in c:\dos for that to work.

After the emm386 you can have 'ram' or 'noems' or a number representing how much memory you want it to manage (4096Kb = 4 Mb).

Since we are on the subject; I don't have the 3 lines in my config.sys, although himem.sys and emm386.exe are in my windows directory. My DOS works fine, what advantage would I gain if I added the 3 lines to my config.sys?

On a 386 or higher, the himem.sys and emm386.exe memory managers free up conventional memory by allowing DOS to be loaded in the HMA (High Memory Area) and device drivers etc to be loaded in UMBs (Upper Memory Blocks).

It can make quite a difference, say, if you need 580K + free mem for a DOS program. Try checking you system memory with mem or mem/c/p - odds are, without memory management, you have less than 500K conventional mem.

Doesn't matter much which versions you use, as long as config.sys points to them - although I should note that the version of smartdrv that ships with Win31 does *not* cache CD drives - you'd need a later version (MS-DOS6.xx or thereabouts).
