Subject: Boot Disk Required?
Comment:

I need some info to get my daughters PC running again. It is a DX486/66 running DOS 6.22 and Win95. She could only start Windows in Safe Mode, and that was it. I attempted to reinstall windows but the CD was not recognised, after attepting to re-install the cd drivers, I got a message in Dos looking for a boot disk. Where do I get a Boot disk. Can I make one for her off of my PC? I'm a little over my head on this one, please help.

Howdy, I don't know why it is looking for a boot disk if all you did was try to install the CD-ROM drivers. Are you getting into DOS cause DOS should not give a error message of looking for a boot disk. The system will just hang and ask you to insert a boot disk. Just trying to get clear on you're problem. You can use a boot disk from another but if you try to use any commands you might get the message, incorrect DOS version. If nothing on the computer is important and you know you have the CD-ROM drivers of diskette go ahead and make a boot disk from you're computer and run FDISK, remove any partitions that are present, do the restart things and make new partitions. Format the C: drive with the /s command to copy over the system files and then load the DOS CD-ROM drivers, don't load DOS. Once they are installed then run setup from the Win 9.x CD and all should be fine. IF you have any more questions, just e-mail me.

Want to try to fix the present installation? If you can boot to safe mode you should be able to boot to command prompt only. Run the full scandisk. If ok replace the system dat with system da0. See "restoreing the registry" in introducing win95. If that dont work set up the real mode cd-rom drivers to load with config.sys (.sys files) and autoexec.bat(mscdx.exe) to see the cd rom drive in dos. Then run setup. By the way to make the boot disk use c:\windows\command\ format A /s Useing the boot disk to load the cd rom drivers avoids "dos compatibility mode" and is the perfered method. If there is no config.* in c:\ then setup will try to use the windows drivers to access the cd rom

G'day Randy

You can make a boot disk in Safe Mode by typing... format a: /s in the RUN Command at the Start button [don't forget to insert a disk first, you may also get a message stating that this command should not be run in WINDOWS but I just tested it on my good computer without any problems] but I don't think that is your problem. In Safe Mode check to see if any system type files are in your RECYCLE BIN and restore them if you think that could be it, It sounds a bit like your REGISTRY is corrupted to me, so what I usually do [many times] is to to re-install the CD-Rom drivers, not in SAFE MODE but in DOS and copy the file MSCDEX.EXE [found in C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND]TO C: [and put one in your BOOT DISK, a.k.a. STARTUP DISK, and CD-Rom installation disk too] and restart your computer and select COMMAND PROMPT instead of SAFE MODE and change to the drive letter for your CD-Rom [C:\D: If D is your letter] and insert the WINDOWS CD-ROM and type SETUP and see what happens [have your OEM number ready].

GOOD LUCK RON

Hi,

While in CMOS check out your hard drive parameters and set them correctly if needed. Then try to boot. If boot fails then use ANY boot diskette and reformat (and may be repartition either) your hard drive.

Good luck, Igor M
