Sometimes you just see random files taking up space on your hard drive.
You just want to delete them! That is what I did, and I nearly ruined my Hard Drive.
I’ll show you how to fix the accidental deletion of NTDLR and NTDETECT.
So let’s just say you deleted those files, and you then shut down your computer. The next time you start it up, your computer says:
NTDLR is missing
Press Ctrl-Alt-Del To Restart
-or-
NTDETECT Failed
(Computer Automatically Restarts)
NOTE: You could also have both errors.
What you need to do is insert the Windows OS startup CD. Use the one-time boot menu to boot off of the CD Drive. When the options menu appears (Blue Screen), choose “Repair Windows Using The Windows Recovery Console.” A black screen with white text should appear. You now need to enter in the following code(s) that apply to the errors you have above:
For NTDLR is missing:
Copy D:\i386\ntdlr C:\
Note that you need to replace D: with the letter of your CD drive and C:\ with the letter of your OS hard drive.
For NTDETECT Failed:
Copy D:\i386\ntdetect C:\
Note that you need to replace D: with the letter of your CD drive and C:\ with the letter of your OS hard drive.
NOTE: You need to know the administrator password to do this.
If your computer boots up successfully after doing this, then that was the problem. DON’T delete those files again!
