If, for example, the Google Redirection virus has damaged the Master Boot Record, made the computer unbootable, and nothing appears to work, in a computer running Windows XP, you may need to access the Recovery Console.
Microsoft has disallowed the use of rc.iso to create a Recovery Console disk, but Artellos has created a tool called ARCDC to create a Recovery Console disk:

Double click ARCDC.exe
Follow the dialog until you see 6 options. Please pick (for example): Windows Professional SP2 & SP3
You will be prompted with a Terms of Use by Microsoft, please accept.
You will see a few DOS screens flash by, this is normal.
Next you will be able to choose to add extra files. Select the Default Files.
The last window will allow you to burn the disk using BurnCDCC
Your ISO is located on your Desktop.<<
Note: You need to burn the ISO to a CD, which is not the same as just writing/copying it to a CD. Please use the BurnCDCC program as instructed above.
Then, you need to do the following:
Step 1. Insert the created CD into the CD-ROM drive, and restart the computer.
Step 2. If the computer does not boot from the CD, you need to change its boot order in the BIOS.
Step 3. Restart your PC
Step 4. Watch the computer carefully, as it boots fast, and you need to find out which key takes you to Setup. Normally, it is F2 or Del, but on some computers it may be a different one.
Step 5. Once in the computer’s BIOS, go to the tab where you can set the boot order.
Step 6. If the CD-drive is not at the top of the boot order, move it to the top of the list.
Step 7. Once the CD-drive is at the top of the boot order, go to Exit and select: Exit saving changes.
Step 8. The computer should now boot from the CD.
Step 9. When the “Welcome to Setup” screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
Step 10. When prompted to choose a Windows installation, type 1 and press: Enter
Step 11. When prompted to type the Administrator password, if the administrator password is blank, just press: Enter.
Step 12. When the command prompt opens, type any command accepted by the Recovery Console. A search for Recovery Console commands will provide these.
Step 13. If your system can’t find a partition from which to boot, try fixing the MBR.
Step 14. For example, type fixmbr and press: Enter.
Step 15. When done, type Exit and press Enter to reboot the computer and boot normally into Windows.
