Trying to install 98SE on a SATA II system. Using floppy to start install it will not find the DVD drive, using 98SE CD it can not find “BANNANA”. XP and LINUX have no problem using the drive though. POST lists all the drives I have on this system, Lightscribe DVD-ROM, boot disk is 64gb SSD and 4 x HDD’s 80gb. BIOS is set to IDE mode at this SATA port.

I don’t think the 98 cd is going to see a sata hard drive, if that’s what you have, even in IDE mode. Although if you can get the files copied to the drive you may be able to do the install.
98 isn’t going to install with 8 gig of ram. You need to lower it to 512 meg or less to do the install. Then there are some tweaks that should work to allow 98 to function with 7 1/2 gig of unnecessary ram.
And of course you’ll need to find 98 drivers for the motherboard hardware.
You might be better off finding an old P-III to install 98 on.
Edit What happens if you boot from the 98 cd instead of using a bootdisk?
