Chkdsk Stuck In Stage 1 For More Than 24 Hours

I have 1TB external HDD. It can be identified but not accessible saying , invalid parameters. I ran chkdsk /r, but its stuck on stage 1: examining basic file structure for more than 24 hours now. Im not sure if I should cancel it, I have important data in it. Or is this an indication that my files may be recovered? It is just showing “File record segment XXX is unreadable”

      It’s a good sign that windows sees the drive and the partition on it. You may be able to run recovery software on it. Maybe you can recover at least some of what’s on it.
