(DATED SUNDAY DECEMBER 07 2013)
Hi everyone,I have a bricked ACER W500 windows based tablet…My story is a dual boot I tried with LinuxMint Cinnamon and win 8 …after 2 weeks I got a data dump on a black background screen and now on start up there is no POST, no BIOS access ,just a black screen , no small white cursor at the top left to signal to press F2 on the auxillary keyboard to access InsydeH20 Bios, Windows Blue button on the tablet is on, the tablet’s fan turns on. I spent over 8 hours combing the internet on solutions. hope this website forum helps

I made the mistake (maybe) when I installed Win 8 and did a custom new win 8 install on the ssd but didn’t make a SYSTEM RESERVE of 100 MB for it for reserve files like MBR etc.(I installed win 8 first and then I did Linux)

I hooked up an external DVD optical drive and its trying to boot when I turn on the tablet and then it stops also.

Anyways , I’m trying to flash this tablet’s BIOS and I know of the method for installing a BIOS via a USB bootable DOS thumb drive using RUFUS or some other program like HP USB DISC STORAGE FORMAT TOOL V2.1.8(may be more current versions) and to rename the BIOS file in the yellow DOS folder name to EAB00x64.fd as stated in this link

http://mobility.forumsee.com/a/m/s/…

I just can’t or don’t know how to place any Acer w500 yellow bios dos folder file contents within any of the 2 mentioned USB bootable DOs programs (there’s 3 hidden files supposedly)

The Acer W500 BIOS is called BIOS v.1.14 Updates EC version found in this link as a download zip file

http://www.laptop-software.com/acer…

I’m stumped here and I tried to unhide any hidden files on my laptop wh ich has windows 7

Can anybody show me what I’m doing wrong to get these 3 DOS files within the DOS folder onto at least the easier of the 2 USB boot programs the HP DISC STORAGE FORMAT TOOL

thank you

Gus
Toronto Ontario Canada

It could be the bios chip or it could be something else. You only know it’s not working. Unless you have evidence the bios on that tablet is prone to failure I wouldn’t spend a lot of money replacing it, at least not yet.
If part of the bios is on the drive it’s probably just the setup, like the old compaqs. In that case not having the drive installed would not leave you with a dead screen.
As far as the original attempt to upgrade using USB, did that seem to go ok? I was thinking you could test it on another computer. The update won’t run until you manually type in UPDATE so you could at least see if it was booting to dos without worrying about the update running.
