Can’t Open Attachments In Hotmail

I cannot open attachments in Hotmail and was told I need to download Microsoft Email Client. I must save every email and assign an “open with” program. When I do this, pictures don’t appear, Audio won’t play and some times text won’t appear. ie. Opening a text document won’t show the pictures etc. What do I do?
