USB Crashes Computer – Turns To Black Screen.

When I plug in a USB, my computer goes to a black screen. Could it be static electricity from the carpet? What to do? How do I get it back up?

  1. Could be overloading the USB Controller. USB controllers usually serve TWO USB ports. In your case those would be the TWO front ports. It is also possible if you have a built-in card reader that it is also running off that same controller. If you have a high current device connected to both ports it can overload the controller.

If you are connecting an external USB powered portable hard drive they usually require TWO USB connections to operate correctly. If a USB external drive is failing it can place a bigger load on the port. You can test an external by downloading software from the manufacturer’s site.

In your original post you ask about static discharge. That may be possible. To avoid that touch a metal part of your tower to discharge yourself before touching the USB cable/ drive.
