There are “millions” of folders, sub-folders, sub-sub-folders (etc) and files on the portable drive, many with complicated and unrecognizable names. How can I tell which to erase? I contact Seagate and they didn’t answer my question.

When you have a problem it often sorts things out BUT it will be empty afterwards.
One easy way to do it is to right click the drive in Computer and select Format from the list.
