All sheet fed scanners are prone to this, it is simply dirt on the narrow glass that the paper passes over when it is read. Just clean the glass, dry usually does it, but if not, SLIGHTLY dampen a cloth with a window cleaner and wipe. You never want to get this glass wet because on many designs any wetness can drip around the glass and get on critical internal parts (the harder you press, the more liquid you squeeze out. dry is BEST and some warranties are at least partially void if you clean it wet). Your manual should have detailed cleaning instructions.
