E.g. Most brand name systems and most custom generic desktop systems use an OEM licensed Windows version.
XP CDs with SP2b or later SP2x updates and SP3 updates have an expanded possible number of Product Keys that can be used with them. You make not be able to use some of the possible Product Keys for a SP2b or later CD with an older CD, but you should have no problem using a Product Key for an XP CD that had no SP updates or SP1 or SP2 updates integrated into the CD with SP2b or later CDs . I have used Product Keys for one with SP2 updates with a SP2b CD, no problem. On the other hand, I’ve never had an XP CD that has SP3 updates integrated into the original CD. SP2b or SP2x (a later version) is only printed on the official Microsoft label, not on the Microsoft CD.
If it’s a Product Key for XP Pro, most people have the 32 bit version, but some may have the 64 bit version. All other XP versions are 32 bit. ……..

Use “disk at once” or similar in the burning software to copy it, otherwise the copy won’t be bootable ( there is an *.img file that makes it bootable that is invisible to Windows even when you have it set to show hidden and system files).
E.g. a regular Microsoft OEM CD has the Microsoft holograms and “For Distribution with a new PC only.” printed on it. You can use a copy of that with any OEM licensed Product Key that is for the same version, Home or Pro.
If you do make a copy of an XP CD, while you’re at it you might as well make a “silpstreamed” CD that has the SP3 updates integrated into it. Instructions about how to do that are plentiful on the web. If your mboard has SATA drive controllers, you can also integrate the SATA drive controller drivers into the contents of the “slipstreamed” CD, e.g. by using the freeware nLite program to integate both those and the SP3 updates.
All the “slipstreamed” XP CDs I’ve made that had SP2 or SP3 updates integrated into them by doing a procedure work fine with the original Product Key for the CD. ……..
An XP Reinstallation CD or similar that came with a brand name system computer usually has certain files that have been modified such that you CANNOT install Windows from scratch, or run a Repair installation of Windows procedure, unless the computer you use it with is the same brand name model, or a one of a small group of models made at about the same time. Windows 7 is a different animal. On installation Windows 7 placed 125 fonts by default. Then whatever application you installed placed additional fonts on top of it. Removing fonts without knowing how they got there in the first place can cause your personally installed programs and software to stop functioning properly.
From Safe Mode, type cmd in Search. In the little black box that pops up type sfc /scannow then hit the Enter key and let it run through. This will check system files and replace if necessary. Note the single space after sfc.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

In theory the most recent operating system is supposed to be faster than its predecessor – but in reality it could be different. For this reason I suggest you read THIS and judge for yourself which will run faster on your not-so-old machine.
