If it is a PC with a separate monitor are there any controls on the front of the monitor that might fix it?
Another possibility is incorrect refresh rate: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial… For most LCD monitors a refresh rate of 60Hz works well, although it is best to use what is recommended for the monitor.

Windows Explorer is one choice that should at least get you part way. Right clicking on the item and choosing properties should show you the file extension, if there is one. If the item is a folder then there won't be an extension.

Was BIOS password enabled before the ransom demand?
Tell us what you can about how you disbled the password. Did you literally short two points inside the computer, or was that just a figure of speech?
When you power-on the computer, does ANYTHING at all appear on the screen? Even just a flashing underline? Does a short message appear saying which key to press to access startup options?
You didn’t answer riider‘s question in reply #7 asking if you saw an input box asking for a “Startup Password”. He linked an image of the input box in the last line of post #7. Please say whether such an input box appeared.

As Derek pointed out .docx files are actually a compressed or zip file. If all else fails you may be able to recover some data by going into the compressed file and extracting it by hand.
If you wish to try:
Open the .docx file with something like 7-zip, which is an open source archive program. You can also use Zip.
Once you have the file open, you should see three directory’s and one file:
docProps word -rels [Content_Types].xml
Open the directory: word In the directory, there should be a file called: document.xml
This is the file that contains your data, along with a ton of markup stuff.
Copy this file to someplace you can work on it.
Next, use a text editor like Notepad to open the document.xml file.
You can start your search by looking for the string:
space=”preserve”>
Do a Find, in the text editor. The text following this string should be part of the data your looking for.
You will need to go through the whole document as all the pieces of your data are spread out all over and NOT all your data will be preceded by this string, so once you get to the bottom, check to make sure you got it all.
I’m not sure of the XML codes, but this has worked for me in the past. If you know XML you may have a better search method.

As far as the spreadsheet itself, even if they didn’t forward it, they could save it and attach it to another email.
Even if you made it viewable only once by including code to erase all the data once it was closed, they’d still have the original copy that they could download, not open (once they realized what was happening) and sent it to someone else.
They could also take a screen shot of the file and piece it back together so that the data could be viewed even if it wasn’t in spreadsheet form.
Bottom line: If you don’t trust the recipient to follow your instructions and keep the document private, don’t send it to them.
Putting the file on a secure server accessible only by those with randomly changing credentials (e.g. RSA SecurID) can be somewhat safer, assuming you don’t allow saving of the data to an external system and assuming – ready for this? – you can prevent the user from sharing his SecurID tag and PIN with the bad guys and/or prevent the bad guy from looking over someone’s shoulder while they “legitimately” access the file.
Hey, I got it! Store the file on a single standalone system in a locked room and use the most intense biometric security measures possible – retina scans, finger print scans, voice recognition, etc. If you do all that, your data might be safe from being viewed by those that aren’t authorized. Good luck!
