This is not strictly required since you already said that the drive does not have an operating system on it. If you are making a drive to use on a different system with possibly a different operating system, then copying the files and folders may be the better solution. If you are making a back up for the files to be set aside then consider either copying or a back up solution (Windows back up or other). As far as speed is concerned, the way the drive is connected will make the most difference so connect the drive as an internal SATA drive with the fastest available SATA speeds (SATA III).

If you install a new hard drive then you will need to reinstall Windows from scratch. If you had the recovery disk set that your friend should have made then you can recover form this onto the new drive. If you had proof of ownership then Samsung might have been convinced to send or sell you a recovery set for your computer. Since you probably do not then you will have to purchase a new Windows 7 disk (Retail or non-branded OEM disk with key). If the BIOS does not show the new hard drive or confirmed good hard drive then there is something wrong with the cable to the hard drive or the motherboard itself. As mentioned, you cannot use a hard drive with a preinstalled copy of Windows unless Samsung sold it to you for that model of machine.
