I understand that Apple makes different cables for different models. Make sure you have the right cable for your model laptop. Just because it says mini dvi to vga doesn't mean you have the correct cable. When you have the right cable connected, it should display immediately. Good Luck.

Have you, or is it possible someone else who had access to this computer… – dropped it, or dropped anything on it, or otherwise exposed it to a physical jolt ? – spilled liquid on it, or sprayed it with liquid, or exposed it to liquid such as rain ?
Since the computer last worked properly all the time, has there been a power failure event that happened while the AC adapter was plugged in ?
Those things are the most frequent reasons something inside the laptop has been damaged. ……

Bios updates are NEVER offered that way. To install a bios update, you have to deliberately go to the HP web site, look up the available software downloads for your model, choose a bios update, download it, and install it.
What you probably saw was Windows’ Automatic Update suggesting you should install a Windows update.
“Right before this happened i had just finished reading an email.”
Was the email from someone you know, and/or was there anything suspicious about it, e.g. an oddball file name was attached to it, or the text was not something you would expect someone you know would be likely to say ? If it wasn’t from someone you know, and/or if there was anything suspicious about it, you MAY have infected Windows with malware when you clicked on it or tried to read it’s attachment. …….
If your AC adapter was not plugged in while booting, or if it was but there was something wrong with it’s connection to the laptop or the AC adapter was not plugged into AC, your symptoms could be caused by the battery not having enough of a charge to run the computer. Laptop no video (or video problems), and battery, AC adapter, power jack T shooting.
I can't say why HP did any critical bios update. If so then I'd contact them. They need to fix this issue. Generally I try to discourage any attempts to update bios.

If you want to make changes again then next time do them one at a time so that you can note if one of them causes clr.dll crash – you can then undo just that change.
By the way, if you are going to tinker then I suggest you leave System Restore in place so that you can go back if anything goes wrong.
Always pop back and let us know the outcome – thanks

Occasionally email providers do delete dormant accounts; and some will advise to that effect; but likely not all. Sky did so a while back and one was able to contact them by phone to clarify/confirm the messages from Sky were genuine.
