Solved Old IBM Thinkpad R51 With XP Can’t Connect To Home wifi

  • 5

Hi I have an old IBM Thinkpad R51 with windows xp on it and cant connect to my home wifi. It was sitting around and preparing it for sale on ebay(yes people buy these old machines) but at first before all the updates i had to do there was no way to enter a password. After all the updates i can do that now but the system is still not accepting it. I checked heaps of things but i suspect the only thing left that i cant find is wether the machine is discoverable. My home wifi shows up and other connections in my building(neighbours) but the only thing i can think to test it is to take it to a free wifi hotspot. Have little time to do so and i cant remember using wifi in the days when i had windows xp installed on my home desktop…so no experience with doing it. Got any suggestions?

  1. PRO/Wireless 2200BG:
Uninstall the driver of the adapter:
Computer > properties > Device Manager > Network..> wireless adapter > properties > uninstall. Reboot and check if the driver is reinstalled correctly.

or install latest driver from Intel if not already installed:

    Netgear router:
There is US firmware version for your router. Download from Netgear website.
If the router is an Asian model, check for compatibility first
